“The Ghost of Yotsuya” (東海道四谷怪談), Original Japanese ATG Re-Release Movie Poster c. 1982, Design by Masakatsu Ogasawara, B2 Size (51.5 × 72.8 cm) U47
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed circa 1982 for the ATG theatrical revival of The Ghost of Yotsuya, also known as Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan. Originally released by Shintoho in 1959, Nobuo Nakagawa’s celebrated ghost story received a striking new promotional identity for its later Art Theatre Guild release.
The poster explicitly advertises a “new-print complete version in colour”, distinguishing this revival campaign from the film’s original release.
Directed by Nobuo Nakagawa and based on Nanboku Tsuruya’s classic ghost story, the film stars Shigeru Amachi as Iemon and Katsuko Wakasugi as Oiwa. Its story of betrayal, ambition and supernatural vengeance centres on a samurai whose treatment of his wife brings terrifying consequences. Nakagawa’s expressive use of colour, theatrical staging and disturbing imagery helped establish the film as a landmark of Japanese horror.
Masakatsu Ogasawara’s design combines stark monochrome photography with vivid graphic colour. Across the upper half, Oiwa’s disfigured apparition looms at a disorienting angle against the wooden architecture. Below, Amachi’s Iemon grips a drawn sword, its diagonal blade cutting towards the central title.
The black background gives these images tremendous contrast. Stylised lantern motifs enter from the upper-left and lower-right corners, their yellow, orange, purple, blue and green patterns introducing an almost psychedelic quality to the traditional ghost-story imagery.
Across the centre, bright yellow Japanese title lettering fills a red rectangular panel bordered in green and blue. Pink, cyan and red promotional lettering continues the vivid palette, while a fine double border frames the composition.
The upper-left copy announces:
「映画史上に輝く幻の名作、いま甦る……」
“A legendary masterpiece of cinema history, now resurrected…”
The lower-left text identifies the 1959 Shintoho production and ATG distribution, with the familiar interlaced ATG emblem beneath. The small printed design credit appears along the bottom margin.
A distinctive revival poster bringing together classic Japanese horror, ATG film culture and bold Japanese graphic design.
Condition: Excellent.
There are handling creases, surface marks and some edge wear, along part of the top left border. The strong black background and vivid coloured graphics retain excellent display impact.
