Sale price $115.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1976 for the first release of Lullaby of the Earth / 「大地の子守歌」, the acclaimed Japanese drama directed by Yasuzō Masumura and starring Mieko Harada, Meiko Kaji, Taiji Tonoyama, Yoshio Harada, and Kinuyo Tanaka.

Based on a novel by Kyōko Sugimoto, Lullaby of the Earth is widely regarded as one of Masumura’s most moving and uncompromising later films. At once deeply compassionate and unsparing in its treatment of exploitation and suffering, it stands among the director’s most powerful examinations of the brutal pressures placed upon women in modern Japanese history. This poster is especially striking for its emotionally charged imagery and bold calligraphic design, and it survives here in excellent condition.

Film background
Released in 1976, Lullaby of the Earth tells the tragic story of Orin, a young orphan girl in the early Shōwa period who is deceived and sold into prostitution on a remote island. Subjected to cruelty, humiliation, and a harshly unequal world, Orin nevertheless struggles to preserve her dignity, emotional purity, and will to endure.

Directed by Yasuzō Masumura, the film reflects many of the qualities for which he is now so admired: psychological intensity, social critique, and a profound sympathy for female characters confronting oppressive systems. The picture is also remembered for Mieko Harada’s breakthrough performance, which brought her major critical recognition and established her as one of the most important Japanese actresses of her generation.

Poster design
The poster is visually arresting and emotionally immediate. Dominating the composition is a large photographic image of Orin, portrayed by Mieko Harada, shown in a state of visible anguish and vulnerability. Her long dark hair falls loosely around her face, and her clasped hands and upward, tearful expression convey desperation, prayer, and emotional resolve all at once. The image gives the sheet an extraordinary human presence.

Running powerfully down the right side is the title 「大地の子守歌」, rendered in large, raw red calligraphic lettering that gives the design its forceful dramatic structure. On the left, the vertical black copy foregrounds the film’s harsh premise, underscoring the suffering and degradation inflicted on the young heroine. Along the lower edge are a series of small cast portraits, including Meiko Kaji and Kinuyo Tanaka, adding further period character and visual interest to the layout.

The overall effect is austere, emotional, and highly memorable: a poster that captures both the human tragedy and the moral intensity of the film itself.

Condition
Excellent condition. A very attractive example with strong colour, clean presentation, and excellent overall display appeal. Please review the photographs carefully, as they show the exact poster for sale.
