“Madadayo” (まあだだよ), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1993, Akira Kurosawa Artwork, B2 Format (c. 51 × 73 cm) — I285

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the first Japanese release of Madadayo in 1993, featuring artwork by Akira Kurosawa himself. Released in Japan on 17 April 1993, the film was Kurosawa’s thirtieth and final completed feature. This illustrated design offers a particularly personal connection to the director, bringing together his filmmaking and his work as a visual artist.

Written and directed by Akira Kurosawa, the film stars Tatsuo Matsumura and Kyōko Kagawa, supported by Hisashi Igawa, George Tokoro, Masayuki Yui and Akira Terao. Drawing on the writings of Hyakken Uchida, it follows a retired professor and the former students whose affection sustains him through wartime hardship and advancing age. Gentle humour and moments of sadness shape this reflection on friendship, gratitude and the enduring bond between teacher and pupil. The film was presented as a special screening at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.

Printed on one B2 sheet, the composition is dominated by Kurosawa’s exuberant illustration of a banquet. A suited figure dances on a table with a folding fan in each hand, surrounded by rows of animated, open-mouthed guests. Heavy black outlines and energetic passages of blue, green, red and ochre give the gathering warmth and movement. Small bowls and dishes beneath the dancer add an engaging domestic detail.

The crowded illustration is balanced by the generous pale background below. The Japanese title, 「まあだだよ」, meaning “Not yet,” descends in loose, staggered black lettering, while the cast and production credits occupy the lower-left corner. Kurosawa’s printed signature appears beneath the artwork, forming part of the original design.

The tagline across the top reads:

「今、忘れられているとても大切なものが、ここにある。」
“Here is something precious that we are forgetting today.”

The celebratory artwork and quietly reflective wording capture the film’s affectionate view of human relationships. It is an especially appealing example for collectors of Akira Kurosawa, Japanese cinema, director-created artwork and illustrated film posters.
