“The Young Girls of Rochefort” (ロシュフォールの恋人たち), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1967, Catherine Deneuve / Françoise Dorléac, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — T100
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1967 first Japanese release of The Young Girls of Rochefort. Released through Towa and Taihei Film, Jacques Demy’s musical opened in Japanese cinemas on 8 August 1967.
Written and directed by Jacques Demy, with music by Michel Legrand, the film follows twin sisters Delphine and Solange as they dream of romance and careers beyond their hometown. The arrival of travelling entertainers sets their lives among a series of chance encounters, missed connections and unexpected reunions. Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac lead an ensemble including George Chakiris, Gene Kelly, Jacques Perrin and Danielle Darrieux, with choreography by Norman Maen.
The poster captures the film’s exuberance through a large colour photograph of dancers performing in Rochefort’s sunlit square. Outstretched arms, lifted legs and bright white boots create a sweeping rhythm across the composition, while the yellow shopfront and patterned paving bring the town itself into the performance. It is an inviting image that presents the musical through movement and atmosphere.
Below, a compact arrangement of smaller photographs introduces romantic encounters, street scenes and further dance sequences. These images interlock with a purple panel carrying the original French title, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, creating a playful geometric transition between the main photograph and the credits.
The Japanese title, ロシュフォールの恋人たち, stretches across the pale lower section in flowing red and vivid pink lettering. Its rising strokes echo the dancers’ gestures above. A prominent 70mm emblem advertises the theatrical presentation, while the Towa, Taihei and Seven Arts logos complete the lower margin.
The blue promotional line across the top reads:
「美しい港町にあふれる恋の歓び!輝く若さが幸せの夢をよぶ!」
“The joy of love fills a beautiful port town! Radiant youth inspires dreams of happiness!”
With its sunny photography, spacious layout and expressive lettering, this is a charming example of Japanese publicity for French musical cinema. It holds particular appeal for collectors of Jacques Demy, Michel Legrand, Catherine Deneuve and classic screen musicals.
