“Midnight Cowboy” (真夜中のカーボーイ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1970 (film 1969), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P5
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the first Japanese release of Midnight Cowboy (真夜中のカーボーイ), the landmark American New Cinema drama directed by John Schlesinger and starring Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. The film first opened in Japan on 7 February 1970, released by United Artists / ユナイト映画 in Japan.
A gritty, compassionate portrait of loneliness and survival in late-1960s New York, Midnight Cowboy follows a naive Texas drifter who heads to the city chasing easy money, only to form an unlikely bond with a street hustler. The film became a cultural lightning bolt—famously winning the Academy Award for Best Picture (the only X-rated film to do so under the MPAA rating at the time), alongside major awards for direction and screenplay.
Poster design
A superb, minimalist Japanese design centred on a single monochrome still of Hoffman and Voight framed within a deep black field—urban, moody, and intensely sophisticated. The huge red Japanese title 真夜中のカーボーイ dominates the lower third, while a vertical Japanese copyline at left sells the film as a “powerful” New York story. This is an exceptionally elegant, gallery-ready B2 and one of the strongest Japanese designs for any American New Cinema title of the era.
