“Minority Report” (マイノリティ・リポート), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 2002, B2 Size (c. 51.5 × 72.8 cm) ZA1255
An original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report, starring Tom Cruise. Spielberg and Cruise presented the film at the opening of the 15th Tokyo International Film Festival in Shibuya in October 2002. The date printed at the foot of this poster, 7 December, marks its nationwide Japanese release through 20th Century Fox later that year.
In Excellent+ condition. The deep blue-black portrait retains its fine photographic detail, right down to the point of light reflected in the eye.
Film background
Adapted from Philip K. Dick’s short story, Minority Report follows John Anderton, chief of Washington’s Precrime unit in 2054. His officers use the visions of three psychics to arrest people for murders they are about to commit. When Anderton sees himself killing a man he has never met, he has to decide whether the evidence he has trusted throughout his career can be wrong. Colin Farrell plays the federal investigator scrutinising the unit, and Samantha Morton plays Agatha, one of the three psychics.
Poster design
Cruise’s face fills the sheet. Across his eyes, the blue-grey photograph breaks into horizontal streaks and a grid of reddish-brown images. A single eye remains sharply visible at the upper right, an allusion to the film’s use of eye scans to identify and track its citizens.
Cruise’s name stretches across the top in white katakana. Beneath the portrait, Spielberg’s credit sits immediately above the Japanese title, with the English Minority Report in smaller type below. The final line pairs the opening date with the film’s Japanese tagline:
「12/7 誰でも逃げる」
“7 December. Everybody runs.”
