“Mission: Impossible” (ミッション:インポッシブル), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1996, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA470

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1996 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Mission: Impossible (ミッション:インポッシブル), starring Tom Cruise.

Film background

Directed by Brian De Palma, Mission: Impossible re‑imagined the classic 1960s TV series as a slick, paranoid espionage thriller. IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is framed for the deaths of his team and must go rogue to uncover a mole and clear his name. The film is renowned for its intricate double‑crosses, De Palma’s split‑diopter visual style and set‑pieces like the Langley vault heist and the high‑speed Channel Tunnel climax. It was a huge worldwide hit and launched the long‑running Mission: Impossible film franchise.

Poster design

The Japanese B2 uses the now‑iconic profile silhouette of Tom Cruise against a stylised globe, picking out continents in fine grid lines. His shadowed face, rendered in cool blue tones, suggests secrecy and duplicity, while the bright red “TOM CRUISE” lettering across the top and the equally bold Japanese title at the bottom give the design a strong graphic punch. The minimalism of the layout — no explosion, no collage of scenes — perfectly reflects the film’s emphasis on suspense and deception over straightforward action.
