“Mission: Impossible” (ミッション:インポッシブル), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1996, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) T166
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1996 for the first theatrical release of Mission: Impossible, directed by Brian De Palma and starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. Released in Japan on 13 July 1996 through UIP, the film launched the cinema franchise with a tense combination of espionage, deception and elaborate action sequences.
Film background
Adapted from the television series created by Bruce Geller, the story follows an intelligence operative whose team is ambushed during a mission in Prague. Suspected of betrayal, Ethan Hunt must operate outside his organisation to uncover the real traitor and clear his name.
Jon Voight, Emmanuelle Béart, Jean Reno and Ving Rhames join Cruise in a thriller built around shifting loyalties and carefully orchestrated suspense. Its celebrated CIA infiltration sequence became one of the film’s defining images, capturing the extraordinary physical precision demanded by Hunt’s seemingly impossible assignments.
Poster design
A striking composition in black, cool blue and vivid red, centred on Cruise wearing glasses and a headset during the CIA infiltration sequence. His low, horizontal position stretches across the sheet, creating an immediate sense of concentration and danger.
A faint world map and curved grid lines reinforce the international espionage theme. Cruise’s name dominates the top in bold red katakana, balanced by the enormous Japanese title across the lower section. Between them, a white promotional headline celebrates the film’s American opening success.
The printed 13 July release date accompanies the Japanese line 「不可能を可能にする」—“Make the impossible possible.” Paramount and UIP branding complete this distinctive Japanese campaign design.
