This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster issued in the early 1980s during the first great Mobile Suit Gundam boom, produced for ANIMEC / “Total Shop of Animation & Comics” rather than for standard theatrical exhibition.

A rare and highly appealing non-theatrical Gundam artifact, this poster stands apart from the more familiar cinema posters for the original film trilogy. It belongs instead to the wider commercial and fan-culture ecosystem that helped propel Gundam from television series to full-scale cultural phenomenon. Pieces of this kind were produced for promotion within the anime retail and publishing world and survive in far smaller numbers than ordinary movie posters.

Historical context
First broadcast in 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam fundamentally reshaped Japanese animation by introducing a more serious and militarised science-fiction framework to the mecha genre. Under the direction of Yoshiyuki Tomino and with animation by Nippon Sunrise, the series initially met a modest reception but quickly developed into one of the most important franchises in anime history. By 1980–1981, as reruns, model kits, magazines, and the compilation films expanded the brand’s popularity, Gundam entered its first major collector boom.

This poster belongs to that foundational moment. Its connection to ANIMEC is especially significant. Animec was one of the most influential Japanese anime magazines and retail brands of the era, closely associated with serious fan culture, merchandise, and the early collector market. As such, this is not merely a Gundam image poster, but also a document of the franchise’s formative commercial history.

Poster design
The composition is striking, spacious, and unmistakably early-1980s in tone. Against a deep star-filled cosmic field, three central icons of the original series are brought together in a bold, almost emblematic arrangement.

At left, a monumental RX-78-2 Gundam head dominates the sheet, rendered with dramatic modelling and luminous yellow eyes. At centre, the Core Fighter projects forward into space, visually linking pilot and machine. At right, Amuro Ray appears in his white pilot suit, floating alone and holding a slender fencing foil, an unusual and memorable design decision that gives the image a more symbolic, almost chivalric quality than standard combat imagery.

A radiant starburst near the top centre anchors the composition and enhances the poster’s atmospheric, operatic sense of scale. The lower corners retain the key identifiers: the Mobile Suit Gundam logo at left and the ANIMEC / Total Shop of Animation & Comics branding at right.

Rarity and collector significance
Original ANIMEC-associated Gundam posters are considerably scarcer than the regular theatrical material for the original series and films. Because they were tied to retail promotion, fan circulation, or shop-related display, survival rates were typically much lower. For collectors of early Gundam, Sunrise history, or the broader rise of Japanese anime merchandising culture, this is an especially attractive and unusual piece.

It is also a poster with strong crossover appeal: important not only to Gundam collectors, but also to those interested in vintage anime ephemera, 1980s Japanese pop-cultural graphics, and the early infrastructure of the anime collector market.
