“Mrs. Doubtfire” / 「ミセス・ダウト」, Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1994, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA689
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1994 for the first Japanese release of Mrs. Doubtfire / 「ミセス・ダウト」, the beloved comedy-drama directed by Chris Columbus and starring Robin Williams, Sally Field, and Pierce Brosnan.
One of the defining family comedies of the 1990s, Mrs. Doubtfire became a major international box-office success and remains one of Robin Williams’ most iconic screen performances. This Japanese poster captures the film’s warmth, humour, and domestic disguise premise in a bright, character-led design.
Film background
Based on Anne Fine’s novel Alias Madame Doubtfire, the film follows Daniel Hillard, a divorced actor and devoted father who loses regular access to his children after a difficult separation. Desperate to remain part of their daily lives, he disguises himself as an elderly British housekeeper, Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire, and is hired by his former wife to help care for the family.
The film balances broad physical comedy with genuine emotional weight, exploring divorce, parenting, responsibility, and the lengths to which a father will go to remain close to his children. Robin Williams’ dual performance as Daniel and Mrs. Doubtfire remains central to the film’s enduring appeal.
The film was a major commercial and critical success, winning the Academy Award for Best Makeup and two Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor for Robin Williams.
Poster design
The poster uses a warm, inviting composition built around a doorway. On the left, Sally Field as Miranda smiles from behind the doorframe, while on the right Robin Williams, transformed into Mrs. Doubtfire through full prosthetic makeup, stands with the three children gathered cheerfully around her.
The design immediately communicates the film’s central joke: a seemingly perfect housekeeper whose identity is not what it appears. Mrs. Doubtfire’s knowing expression, the children’s warmth, and Miranda’s trusting smile create a beautifully balanced image of comedy and family intimacy.
The Japanese copy at upper right reads:
「料理 洗濯
何でもござれ
子供も任せて安心
今時めずらしいお手伝いさん…
でも何かヘン。」
roughly:
“Cooking, laundry — she can do everything.
You can safely leave the children to her.
A rare kind of housekeeper these days…
But something is strange.”
At the lower left, the names Robin Williams and Sally Field are printed prominently in white, while the Japanese title 「ミセス・ダウト」 appears in large white-and-pink lettering. The lower credit block includes the principal cast and production details, with 20th Century Fox release information.
The overall design is bright, charming, and immediately recognisable: family comedy, disguise, warmth, and Robin Williams at the centre of the image.
