"My Darling Clementine (荒野の決斗)", Original Japanese Movie Poster 1962, Re-Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) N207
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1962 (Showa 37) for the revival release of My Darling Clementine (荒野の決斗), John Ford’s immortal western masterpiece starring Henry Fonda and Victor Mature. This illustrated version is extremely scarce, with very few surviving examples known today.
Film background
My Darling Clementine (1946) is often described as the greatest western ever made by the greatest director of westerns. For many critics and historians, it stands not only as John Ford’s finest western but also as one of the greatest films of his long and distinguished career.
The film dramatizes one of the American West’s most enduring legends: the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Henry Fonda delivers an iconic performance as Wyatt Earp, while Victor Mature portrays Doc Holliday with tragic intensity. Although the narrative takes liberties with historical detail, Ford claimed to have met Wyatt Earp before his death in 1929, and to have staged the climactic shootout in Monument Valley according to Earp’s own account. The result is a poetic, elegiac western that has transcended its genre.
Poster design
The 1962 Japanese B2 poster is a powerful illustrated design. Henry Fonda as Wyatt Earp dominates the composition, sheriff’s star gleaming and revolver in hand, set against the burning ochre skies and mesas of Monument Valley. The bold red Japanese title 「荒野の決斗」 anchors the lower portion, with English titling “John Ford’s My Darling Clementine” positioned at the top. Japanese callouts highlight Ford’s reputation as a cinematic master. The artwork captures both the grit of frontier violence and the mythic grandeur of Ford’s vision.
