“Naked Lunch” (裸のランチ), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1992, First Japanese Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O159
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1992 for the first domestic theatrical release of Naked Lunch (裸のランチ), directed by David Cronenberg and adapted from William S. Burroughs’ landmark novel. First-issue Japanese posters for Cronenberg’s Burroughs fusion are highly collectible—this sheet features the sought-after illustration by Hajime Sorayama.
Film background
Part hallucinatory memoir, part sci-fi noir, the film follows exterminator-turned-writer Bill Lee as he tumbles into an insectile underworld of typewriters that breathe, shadowy handlers, and morphing identities. Cronenberg distills Burroughs’ prose into a fever dream about addiction, authorship, and control, anchored by Peter Weller with Judy Davis, Ian Holm, and Roy Scheider.
Poster design
An iconic minimalist country sheet: Sorayama renders a veiled, headless figure seated atop a beetle-typewriter, a single claw emerging from the draped form while bare, bound feet extend below—erotic, uncanny, and quintessentially Burroughsian. The vast white field is punctuated by scattered vertical Japanese text and the bold calligraphic title 「裸のランチ」 across the header—museum-grade wall presence and the definitive Japanese key art for the film.
