“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, Very Rare Promotional Edition, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O49

Sale price $500.00

This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1984 for the promotion of first theatrical release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (風の谷のナウシカ), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Topcraft, and scored by Joe Hisaishi. Issued prior to the founding of Studio Ghibli in 1985, Nausicaä is the film that catalyzed the studio’s creation and is now regarded as an essential part of its canon.

Unlike the standard theatrical B2s, this promotional variant was produced in extremely limited numbers for specialty circulation. These pieces rarely surface on the market today and are highly coveted by collectors of anime history and Japanese design.

Why this example is extraordinary (rarity & market)

  • Early country-of-origin promotional issue tied to the film’s landmark 1984 release.

  • Dramatically rarer than the standard B2s, with artwork variants seldom seen outside Japan.

  • Historically important: this film marked the start of Miyazaki and Hisaishi’s legendary partnership and directly led to the founding of Studio Ghibli.

Poster design

A breathtaking and painterly composition: Nausicaä rides her faithful Kai, rifle in hand, rendered in a luminous watercolor style by Miyazaki himself. The careful brushwork captures her determination and the raw texture of the Toxic Jungle sky behind her. At bottom right, the elegant NAUSICAÄ logotype and © credits anchor the design in striking simplicity.

The absence of heavy copy lines or clutter allows the artwork to speak for itself—a gallery-worthy piece that reflects the artistry of Miyazaki at the dawn of his cinematic career.
