"Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, Very Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q197
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1984 by Toei(東映)for the first theatrical release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind(風の谷のナウシカ), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Topcraft, and scored by Joe Hisaishi. Although released before Studio Ghibli was officially founded (1985), the film is widely regarded as the work that led to Ghibli’s creation and is considered part of the studio canon.
Authenticity
This point is important: many official later reproductions of Nausicaä poster designs circulate, often sold through Ghibli-related retail channels or reproduced for later promotional use. The example offered here is 100% an original 1984 theatrical printing, issued for the film’s original Japanese cinema campaign — not one of the later shop reproductions.
That distinction matters greatly for collectors. Original first-release Miyazaki and early pre-Ghibli posters are far scarcer than the reproductions many buyers encounter, and demand for authentic theatrical material remains consistently strong.
Printed for the film’s initial run, this scarce original B2(半裁)is coveted by Ghibli collectors and anime-design enthusiasts—a landmark piece from the dawn of modern Japanese animation cinema.
Why this example is extraordinary (rarity & market)
Early, country-of-origin posters for Nausicaä remain in high demand, and dynamic action-scene variants are especially elusive. Historically important as the film that launched Miyazaki/Hisaishi’s iconic partnership and catalyzed Studio Ghibli’s formation.
Poster design
An intense battle tableau: Nausicaä charges forward on her giant bird-mount, Teto perched behind her, while gunships and gliders roar overhead and a titanic Ohmu (王蟲) rises from the Toxic Jungle—its blue facets glowing. The sweeping copy line 「少女の愛が奇跡を呼んだ。」 arcs across the center, and the monumental red logotype 「風の谷のナウシカ」 anchors the base with the small NAUSICAA mark below—an unforgettable, Japan-only composition.
