“Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (風の谷のナウシカ), Original Japanese Illustrated Poster c. 1984, Very Rare, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm)

Sale price $500.00

An original Japanese illustrated poster for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, featuring a beautifully atmospheric image of Nausicaä flying on her Mehve glider with her fox-squirrel companion, Teto. With its delicate watercolour textures and almost entirely uninterrupted artwork, this design offers a particularly appealing alternative to the film’s more text-heavy theatrical posters.

Film background

Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind opened in Japan on 11 March 1984. Adapted from Miyazaki’s own manga, the film was animated by Topcraft, produced by Isao Takahata, and scored by Joe Hisaishi. Although made before Studio Ghibli was founded, it is closely associated with the studio’s origins.

Set in a world scarred by environmental catastrophe, the story follows a young princess who seeks understanding between humanity and the extraordinary creatures of a toxic forest. Its combination of ecological imagination, compassion, and exhilarating flight sequences established themes that would recur throughout Miyazaki’s filmmaking.

Poster design

The composition places Nausicaä directly above the viewer, leaning forward over the handles of her white Mehve glider, with Teto perched beside her shoulder. Behind her, an enormous winged insect stretches diagonally across the sheet, its segmented body and richly patterned wings creating a striking contrast with the streamlined aircraft.

Muted blue, warm terracotta, pale yellow, and soft green give the illustration a gentle, painterly character despite the dramatic aerial scene. Fine outlines and translucent washes preserve the intimacy of a drawing, while the close viewpoint creates a powerful sense of movement and scale.

With no large title or billing block competing for attention, the image fills the sheet and makes an especially attractive display piece for collectors of Nausicaä, Miyazaki, and vintage Japanese animation posters.
