This is an original Japanese B2 SEGA character poster for Neon Genesis Evangelion, featuring Shinji Ikari in his distinctive blue-and-white plugsuit, illustrated by Katsuichi Nakayama / 中山勝一.

The design places the series’ central character against a spacious pale background, combining expressive character illustration with oversized black typography. Its restrained composition gives Shinji exceptional prominence, making this an attractive example of 1990s Evangelion character artwork.

Created by Hideaki Anno, Neon Genesis Evangelion follows Shinji Ikari as he is drawn into NERV’s struggle against the mysterious beings known as Angels.

As the pilot of Evangelion Unit-01, Shinji occupies the emotional centre of the story. His uncertainty, need for acceptance and difficult relationships give the series a deeply personal dimension alongside its spectacular mechanical imagery.

This poster concentrates on that human aspect, presenting Shinji with a tentative smile and a slightly self-conscious expression. His familiar pilot equipment connects the portrait to the series’ science-fiction setting, while the composition allows his personality to remain the principal focus.

Poster design

Shinji’s seated figure extends diagonally across the sheet, his body turned slightly as he looks towards the viewer. His blue-and-white plugsuit, with black detailing, red accents and the “01” marking on his chest, provides the main colour within the composition.

The pale background is interrupted by a soft green rectangular panel behind his lower body. This simple geometric element adds depth while preserving the design’s open, uncluttered appearance.

Enormous black serif lettering runs vertically down the left side:

“IKARI SHINJI”

The blue SEGA logo appears at upper right, balancing the large character name. At lower right, the English series title sits above the explicit illustration credit:

“Illustration: KATSUICHI NAKAYAMA”

The accompanying copyright line credits GAINAX / Project Eva, TV Tokyo and NAS, connecting the sheet to the original television-series property.
