“Niagara” (ナイアガラ), Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1962, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P49

Sale price $300.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued in Japan for a 1962 theatrical re-release of Niagara—the 1953 Technicolor noir-thriller directed by Henry Hathaway, starring Marilyn Monroe, Joseph Cotten, and Jean Peters. One of Monroe’s most iconic early dramatic performances, Niagara blends glossy, postcard-bright location spectacle with simmering jealousy, violence, and fatalism.

Film background

Set against the roaring backdrop of Niagara Falls, the film pivots on a volatile marriage and a murder plot—where desire curdles into paranoia and every glance feels weaponised. Niagara is often celebrated for its striking colour cinematography and for presenting Monroe not simply as a star, but as a dangerous, magnetic screen presence—equal parts glamour and threat.

Poster design

A superb example of early-’60s Japanese re-release design: clean negative space, bold titling, and carefully placed photographic vignettes. The composition centres on a full-figure Monroe in a rose-pink dress, arched back in a charged embrace—an instantly recognisable, high-impact image that reads from across a room.
Below, torn-paper “windows” reveal key story beats: a close-up of Monroe and her lover, a tense portrait insert, and dramatic colour blocks that echo the film’s Technicolor mood. The typography is elegant and confident—the large red katakana 「ナイアガラ」 at the top functions like a headline, while the smaller credits and diamond bullets add a sharp, modernist rhythm.

Rarity and condition

Japanese B2 re-release posters from this period were produced for short theatrical runs and were not intended to survive—making clean examples increasingly scarce, especially for a major Monroe title with this level of graphic restraint and wall presence.
