“O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, Original Japanese Movie Poster 2001, First Theatrical Release, B1 Size (c. 73 × 103 cm) JA15

This is an original Japanese B1 theatrical release poster, printed in 2001 for the film’s first release in Japan. Issued in the impressive B1 cinema-display format — approximately twice the size of the standard Japanese B2 poster — this is a scarce large-format poster for Joel and Ethan Coen’s much-loved O Brother, Where Art Thou?, released in Japan as オー・ブラザー！.

The design is especially striking in this size. Set against a vast sun-drenched orange sky, it captures the film’s distinctive Depression-era Southern atmosphere while presenting the three central fugitives in boldly expressive close-up: George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson, and John Turturro fill the lower portion of the composition, while tiny chain-gang figures march across the green horizon behind them. The oversized white Japanese title across the top gives the poster a strong graphic identity, while the English subtitle “O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?” and the black billing block beneath reinforce the period of the original Japanese release. The poster also prominently references George Clooney’s Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, tying it firmly to the film’s theatrical campaign in Japan.

The B1 format is an important part of the appeal. While most Japanese theatrical posters were issued in the smaller B2 size, B1 posters were printed in much smaller numbers for larger cinema and lobby displays. For a Coen Brothers title such as this — particularly one with such an attractive, minimalist Japanese design — the format is considerably harder to find and gives the artwork far greater presence.

Condition

Offered here in excellent plus, unrestored condition, with only light signs of age and handling. The poster presents extremely well overall, with strong, unfaded colour, a very clean front, and no major condition issues visible in the photographs. There may be minor handling or storage wear commensurate with age, but overall this is a particularly well-preserved example. The reverse is also clean overall, again consistent with the stated grade.

A scarce and highly displayable first-release Japanese B1 for one of the Coen Brothers’ most admired films — and an especially appealing large-format poster for collectors of original Japanese cinema paper, American independent film, or George Clooney material.
