“On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” (女王陛下の007), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1969, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) S76
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical release poster, printed in 1969 for the film’s first release in Japan of Peter R. Hunt’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (女王陛下の007), starring George Lazenby, Diana Rigg and Telly Savalas. The film opened theatrically in Japan on 13 December 1969 and was the sixth James Bond film produced by Eon Productions.
Adapted from Ian Fleming’s 1963 novel, the film follows Bond to the Swiss Alps, where he infiltrates Blofeld’s mountaintop research facility and uncovers a biological-warfare plot. It is unique within the classic Bond series for starring George Lazenby in his sole appearance as 007, and for placing Bond’s relationship with Tracy di Vicenzo, played by Diana Rigg, at the emotional centre of the story.
Poster design
A fantastic Japanese first-release design built around an exceptionally dense action montage, with George Lazenby as Bond dominating the centre while the surrounding imagery compresses virtually the entire film into a single explosive composition.
Bond is shown holding his gun vertically against his face, framed by the snow-covered Swiss Alps. Around him are some of the film’s most memorable set pieces: ski pursuits, helicopter action, the mountain cable car, explosions and car chases, together with portraits of Diana Rigg as Tracy and Telly Savalas as Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
Across the top, the yellow Japanese campaign copy declares:
「シリーズ最高の面白さ！シリーズ最大のスケール！007＝ボンド・シリーズ第六弾！」
— approximately “The greatest excitement in the series! The biggest scale in the series! The sixth 007 / Bond adventure!”
Immediately beneath, the red promotional copy highlights the film’s Alpine action, including Bond’s ski escape from the summit of the Swiss Alps and a high-speed European pursuit involving the new Aston Martin.
The lower half is dominated by the enormous scarlet Japanese title:
「女王陛下の007」
with the oversized 007 numerals giving the poster tremendous visual weight. The original United Artists / Transamerica branding appears at lower left, alongside the Japanese ユナイト映画 distribution credit.
The combination of Lazenby, Diana Rigg, Blofeld, Alpine action, helicopters, skiing and the huge red Japanese title makes this a particularly strong piece of original Bond advertising from the late 1960s.
Film significance
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service has undergone one of the great critical re-evaluations within the Bond series. Once regarded as an anomaly because of Lazenby’s single appearance, it is now widely admired for its unusually strong emotional dimension, Peter Hunt’s dynamic direction, spectacular Alpine action and John Barry’s celebrated score.
Its singular place in Bond history — the only George Lazenby 007 film and one of the most emotionally consequential entries in the franchise — gives original 1969 Japanese material particular collector appeal.
It is over 56 years old!
Condition
Very Good+ / Excellent. A strong surviving example with excellent colour saturation and very attractive overall presentation. The Alpine whites, blue skies and vivid red title remain particularly crisp and bright.
There is a small pinhole near the upper-left area, visible in the detailed photograph, together with light handling and storage wear, minor creasing and small age-related marks consistent with an original theatrical poster from 1969. The reverse remains generally clean, with some light fold / storage character.
Importantly, the principal imagery, title and colours remain extremely strong and the poster presents excellently overall.
Once framed, it will display beautifully.
