This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical re-release poster for On the Waterfront / 「波止場」, printed in Japan in 1973 for the film’s theatrical revival.

This is not a modern reproduction or decorative reprint, but an original Japanese cinema poster from the film’s 1973 re-release campaign. It is especially desirable because it presents one of the defining American films of the 1950s through a richly designed Japanese poster layout, combining romantic star imagery, dockland drama, Academy Award recognition, and bold period typography.

Film background
Directed by Elia Kazan and starring Marlon Brando, Eva Marie Saint, Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, and Rod Steiger, On the Waterfront is one of the landmark works of post-war American cinema.

The film follows Terry Malloy, a former boxer working on the New Jersey docks, who becomes entangled in corruption, intimidation, loyalty, conscience, and moral awakening. Brando’s performance as Terry remains one of the most influential screen performances in film history, central to the development of naturalistic modern acting.

On the Waterfront was both a critical and commercial success. It received twelve Academy Award nominations and won eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Marlon Brando, Best Supporting Actress for Eva Marie Saint, and Best Director for Elia Kazan. The poster itself references the film’s major Academy Award recognition at the upper right.

The film also features a powerful original score by Leonard Bernstein, one of the most important composers of the 20th century.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 poster is a handsome re-release design, combining large-scale character imagery with dramatic supporting stills.

The central image shows Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint in an intimate pose, foregrounding the film’s emotional and romantic dimension. Brando’s raised arm, cigarette, and intense profile give the composition a strong sense of masculine tension, while Saint’s expression softens the image and draws attention to the film’s human drama.

At the top, a monochrome waterfront scene evokes the film’s dockland setting, while the printed Academy Award reference and Oscar statuette graphic emphasize the film’s prestige. At lower left, a smaller action still shows the characters running through a shadowed industrial space, reinforcing the film’s atmosphere of danger, pursuit, and moral conflict.

The title 「波止場」 appears in large blue-green Japanese lettering across the lower section, with the English title On the Waterfront printed beneath in red script. The vertical colour bars at the left edge give the poster a distinctly 1970s Japanese re-release character, setting it apart from earlier 1950s campaign material.
