“Operation Crossbow” (クロスボー作戦), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1965, Sophia Loren / George Peppard, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm)
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the first Japanese release of Operation Crossbow (クロスボー作戦) in 1965. Directed by Michael Anderson, produced by Carlo Ponti, and starring George Peppard, Sophia Loren, Trevor Howard, John Mills, Richard Johnson and Tom Courtenay, the film opened theatrically in Japan on 30 July 1965, distributed by MGM.
A large-scale wartime espionage thriller inspired by the real Allied campaign against Nazi Germany’s V-weapons programme, Operation Crossbow combines intelligence work, undercover infiltration and aerial warfare with the polished international production values of a major 1960s MGM spectacle.
Film background
Set during the Second World War, the film follows Allied intelligence efforts to identify and destroy Germany’s secret V-1 and V-2 rocket programme.
After evidence emerges that Nazi scientists are developing increasingly dangerous long-range weapons, a small group of agents is selected to infiltrate German facilities under false identities. Among them is John Curtis, played by George Peppard, whose mission takes him deep inside the underground weapons programme.
The ensemble cast is unusually strong. Sophia Loren appears as Nora, while Trevor Howard, John Mills, Richard Johnson, Tom Courtenay, Jeremy Kemp, Anthony Quayle, Lilli Palmer and Paul Henreid contribute to the film’s broad wartime narrative. Michael Anderson directs from a screenplay by Richard Imrie, Derry Quinn and Ray Rigby, with music by Ron Goodwin.
Rather than presenting the conflict purely through battlefield spectacle, the film focuses heavily on intelligence gathering, false identities, covert operations and technological warfare, giving it a distinctive blend of spy thriller and large-scale war film.
Poster design
The Japanese first-release artwork is a superb example of mid-1960s illustrated war-film advertising, combining painted portraiture, graphic symbolism and explosive battlefield imagery.
Across the top is the bold blue campaign line:
「連合軍の勝利を決定的にした極秘指令がこれだ!!」
Approximately:
“This was the top-secret directive that made Allied victory decisive!!”
The wording immediately frames the film as a story of hidden military intelligence rather than simply conventional combat.
At upper left, a beautifully painted montage brings together the principal cast. Sophia Loren and George Peppard dominate the group, accompanied by Trevor Howard, John Mills and other major characters, their portraits arranged almost like a wartime command tableau.
The pale grey background leaves considerable open space around the figures, allowing the portraits and typography to carry unusual visual weight.
Super Panavision spectacle
At upper right appears the period presentation copy:
「総天然色」
「スーパーパナビジョン」
advertising the film’s full-colour Super Panavision presentation.
This is an important part of the original campaign. Operation Crossbow was being sold in Japan not only as a suspenseful wartime story but as a large-format international spectacle, with aircraft, rockets, explosions and massive military installations designed for the widescreen cinema experience.
The poster reflects that scale.
A stark black, angular graphic occupies the right side of the composition, while aircraft and missile imagery streak across the lower half.
Below, bright yellow explosions erupt across an aerial battlefield filled with bombers, rockets and contrails.
The combination of restrained portraiture above and violent mechanised warfare below creates a powerful division between the people planning the mission and the destructive technology at its centre.
Typography
The lower third is dominated by the monumental Japanese title:
クロスボー作戦
rendered in enormous cream-and-black dimensional lettering.
Its block-like forms rise from a devastated cityscape, giving the typography itself an almost architectural quality.
Alongside it appears the English title:
OPERATION CROSSBOW
together with a stylised aircraft / weapon graphic.
The cast list is printed prominently in red:
ソフィア・ローレン
ジョージ・ペパード
トレバー・ハワード
ジョン・ミルズ
リチャード・ジョンソン
トム・コートネイ
while the lower edge identifies:
製作 カルロ・ポンティ
監督 マイケル・アンダーソン
The original MGM branding at lower right confirms the poster’s period Japanese theatrical distribution.
Historical context
The real Operation Crossbow encompassed Allied intelligence and military efforts directed against Germany’s V-weapon programme.
The film dramatises that history through fictionalised undercover agents and secret installations, using the V-weapons as both a historical subject and a symbol of the increasingly technological nature of modern warfare.
In the mid-1960s, this mixture of Second World War history, espionage and advanced weapons technology was particularly potent, sitting alongside the era’s enormous appetite for spy cinema and large international war epics.
The Japanese poster captures that combination perfectly: glamorous international stars occupy the upper field while rockets, aircraft and explosions consume the lower half.
