“Phantom of the Paradise” / 「ファントム・オブ・パラダイス」, Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1988, Brian De Palma / Paul Williams / William Finley / Jessica Harper, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) D279
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical re-release poster for Phantom of the Paradise / 「ファントム・オブ・パラダイス」, Brian De Palma’s cult 1974 rock-horror musical, issued in Japan for its 1988 theatrical re-release.
This poster is especially desirable because it uses one of the film’s most visually arresting Japanese designs: a huge pink-and-black halftone face, a single staring eye, surreal stage imagery, bold psychedelic typography, and the unmistakable iconography of Death Records.
Film background
Written and directed by Brian De Palma, Phantom of the Paradise is a feverish fusion of rock opera, horror, satire, and Faustian tragedy. The film follows composer Winslow Leach, whose music is stolen by the sinister producer Swan, leading him into disfigurement, revenge, and transformation into the Phantom haunting the Paradise theatre.
The film stars William Finley, Paul Williams, Jessica Harper, and Gerrit Graham, with music and songs by Paul Williams. Its blend of glam rock, Grand Guignol theatre, pop satire, and operatic melodrama has made it one of the great cult films of the 1970s.
Although initially a commercial disappointment in many markets, Phantom of the Paradise later developed a devoted international following. Its Japanese re-release material is particularly attractive, reflecting the film’s later cult status and its strong visual compatibility with Japanese graphic design.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 poster is a vivid and highly theatrical re-release design. The composition is dominated by a giant close-up of a masked face, rendered in hot pink, black, and orange halftone textures. The single exposed eye gives the poster an immediate sense of obsession, surveillance, and theatrical menace.
Across the lower centre, the English title PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE appears in large psychedelic lettering, with “A Brian De Palma Film” printed above. Small photographic inserts show the film’s principal characters and stage imagery, adding to the poster’s collage-like, dreamlike quality.
At the top, the Japanese title 「ファントム・オブ・パラダイス」 is printed in bold white lettering, while the upper corners include character stills. The lower section carries the film’s credits, including Paul Williams, William Finley, Jessica Harper, George Memmoli, and Gerrit Graham, along with Japanese distributor and release information.
The poster’s visual language is pure cult cinema: acidic colour, rock-opera excess, horror-mask iconography, and 1970s pop theatricality, reintroduced through a late-1980s Japanese re-release lens.
