“Philadelphia” (フィラデルフィア), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1994, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA458
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in the 1994 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Philadelphia (フィラデルフィア), starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.
Film background
Directed by Jonathan Demme, Philadelphia was one of the first major Hollywood films to address HIV/AIDS and homophobia head‑on. Tom Hanks plays Andrew Beckett, a talented lawyer who is secretly living with AIDS. After he is unjustly fired, he hires Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), an initially prejudiced personal‑injury attorney, to sue his former firm for discrimination. The film was both a critical and commercial success, earning Hanks an Academy Award for Best Actor and another Oscar for Bruce Springsteen’s haunting song “Streets of Philadelphia.”
Poster design
The Japanese B2 design focuses squarely on its two leads. Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington’s faces loom large, split across the poster in high‑contrast monochrome, with the Ben Franklin Bridge and nighttime cityscape anchoring the lower half. Red Japanese text slices vertically through the centre, mirroring the emotional and social divides explored in the film. The title “PHILADELPHIA” in stark yellow at the bottom provides a strong visual counterpoint and adds to the powerful, dramatic tone of the layout.
