This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 2009 for the first release of Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life (劇場版ポケットモンスター ダイヤモンド＆パール アルセウス 超克の時空へ), the twelfth Pokémon theatrical feature and the climactic film of the Diamond & Pearl movie trilogy.
Released in Japan on 18 July 2009, the film brings together an extraordinary group of Legendary Pokémon—Arceus, Dialga, Palkia and Giratina—in one of the most mythology-driven stories of the entire early Pokémon movie cycle.
This original Japanese B2 survives in exceptional Near Mint condition, retaining the dazzling colour and extraordinary visual intensity of the original theatrical campaign.
Film background
The story centres on Arceus, the Mythical Pokémon regarded within Pokémon lore as the ancient creator of the universe.
Long before the events of the film, Arceus lends part of its extraordinary power to humanity through an object known as the Jewel of Life, allowing a barren land to flourish. When the jewel is not returned as promised, Arceus is betrayed and enters a long sleep filled with anger towards humankind.
Centuries later, Ash, Pikachu, Dawn and Brock arrive in Michina Town just as distortions in space and time begin threatening the region. Their journey ultimately brings them into contact with Dialga, Palkia and Giratina, before Arceus itself awakens to exact revenge.
Through time travel, Ash and his companions attempt to uncover the truth behind the original betrayal and prevent the destruction of both the human and Pokémon worlds.
The film forms the culmination of the interconnected storyline begun with The Rise of Darkrai and continued through Giratina and the Sky Warrior, bringing together the principal Legendary Pokémon associated with the Sinnoh mythology.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 is an extraordinarily dramatic and densely layered theatrical composition, dominated by Arceus at the exact centre of the image.
Arceus appears almost deity-like, floating above an ancient stone platform and surrounded by a brilliant golden energy halo. The circular structure behind its body evokes both a celestial symbol and the wheel-like form incorporated into Arceus’s own design.
The effect presents Arceus not simply as another powerful Pokémon but as an almost mythological presence—a being whose power exceeds the conventional boundaries of the Pokémon world.
Behind it, a dark planetary form hangs across the upper edge, giving the image an immense cosmic scale.
Surrounding Arceus are the three great Legendary Pokémon of the preceding films:
Palkia, associated with space, appears at upper left.
Giratina, ruler of the Distortion World, emerges below it.
Dialga, associated with time, appears at right.
Their placement immediately establishes the film as the climax of the Sinnoh Legendary saga.
In the foreground appear Ash and Pikachu, alongside Dawn, Brock, Piplup, Monferno, Staraptor, Croagunk, Buneary and other characters from the Diamond & Pearl era, while the small Spiky-eared Pichu provides another distinctive visual link to the 2009 campaign.
Japanese title and campaign copy
The enormous title dominates the lower half:
「アルセウス 超克の時空へ」
Approximately:
“Arceus: To the Conquering of Space-Time”
The international title became:
“Arceus and the Jewel of Life.”
The Japanese title’s use of 「超克」 carries the sense of overcoming, transcending or surpassing, reinforcing the film’s unusually cosmic scale.
The vertical campaign line at upper right reads:
「限界を超えた闘いの果てに、この世界の謎が明かされる―。」
Approximately:
“At the end of a battle beyond all limits, the mystery of this world will be revealed.”
This line is particularly fitting given the film’s focus on the origins of the Pokémon universe and the mythology surrounding Arceus.
The Diamond & Pearl era
The Diamond & Pearl period occupies a particularly nostalgic place within mid-2000s Pokémon history.
The Nintendo DS games introduced the Sinnoh region together with some of the franchise’s most important Legendary Pokémon, and the accompanying anime and theatrical films dramatically expanded Pokémon’s cosmology.
Arceus and the Jewel of Life was especially important because it brought the mythology surrounding Dialga, Palkia and Giratina to its conclusion while placing Arceus—the creator figure of the Pokémon world—at the centre of a theatrical film for the first time.
The result is one of the most visually spectacular and lore-heavy entries in the original Pokémon film series.
Cultural significance
Arceus subsequently became one of the most important Mythical Pokémon in the franchise.
Its role within Pokémon mythology has only increased over time, particularly following the release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which returned the character to the centre of the Pokémon universe for a new generation of players.
The poster itself is also exceptionally attractive, with the luminous golden Arceus, dark cosmic sky, brilliant Legendary Pokémon and saturated theatrical colouring making it a superb display piece.
