“Pretty But Wicked” (絶叫 / Zekkyō), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1965 (film 1963), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) P196

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1965 for the Japanese release of the Brazilian drama Pretty But Wicked (original Brazilian title Bonitinha, Mas Ordinária), released in Japan as 絶叫 (Zekkyō, meaning “Scream / Outcry”). Directed by J. A. de Carvalho (José Antonio de Carvalho), the film stars Brazilian actresses Odete Lara and Lia Rossi. It was marketed in Japan as part of the “Sexation Series: Brazil Edition” (セクセーション・シリーズ・ブラジル篇) and distributed by N.I.C. (エヌ・アイ・シー映画配給), with the sheet also marked 成人映画 (adult film) reflecting its provocative themes.

Film background
Based on a famous play by Nelson Rodrigues, the story is a dark social satire in which a wealthy man offers a huge sum to any man willing to marry his daughter after a scandal has “ruined” her reputation. What follows is a morally charged spiral of desire, class pressure, hypocrisy, and obsession—very much in line with Rodrigues’s reputation for exposing the contradictions of middle-class respectability. The Japanese campaign leaned into this intensity, presenting the film as a shocking, adult “continental” import from South America.

Poster design
A striking, graphic Japanese design mixing glamour with danger: the large, soft-focus close-up of a woman dominates the top, while a halftone male face and the silhouetted couple below create a sense of predation and obsession. The huge blue title 絶叫 anchors the centre with bold modern impact, while the vertical side text and series branding セクセーション・シリーズ・ブラジル篇 situate it firmly in Japan’s mid-1960s adult-import marketing. An exceptionally displayable B2—both visually powerful and culturally fascinating as a piece of Japanese distribution history.
