“Puss in Boots / Spider-Man / Captain Harlock” (長靴をはいた猫／スパイダーマン／宇宙海賊キャプテンハーロック), Toei Manga Matsuri Japanese Movie Poster 1978, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) T10

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the summer 1978 Toei Manga Matsuri (東映まんがまつり), which opened in Japan on 22 July 1978. The five-film programme brought together Puss in Boots, Spider-Man, Space Pirate Captain Harlock: The Mystery of the Arcadia, Message from Space: Galactic Wars, and Candy Candy’s Summer Vacation. It combined a revival screening of Puss in Boots with contemporary animated and live-action adventures. 

Poster design

A lively combination of fairytale illustration, superhero photography, and science-fiction imagery fills the sheet. Pero from Puss in Boots dominates the upper section, wearing an enormous purple hat and yellow bow, surrounded by the princess, castle, horse-drawn carriage, and supporting characters. The film’s red Japanese title stretches across the cream background beneath the colourful Toei Manga Matsuri emblem.

An orange diagonal banner separates the fairytale artwork from four supporting panels. Toei’s live-action Spider-Man occupies the middle left, his red-and-blue costume striking against the pale background, with villains and action imagery completing the montage. Opposite him, Message from Space: Galactic Wars features spacecraft and a silver robot against an otherworldly landscape.

The lower panels pair Captain Harlock, shown beside the imposing Arcadia, with Candy Candy’s Summer Vacation, featuring Candy in her nurse’s cap alongside supporting characters. Pink borders and bold Japanese logos bring the contrasting subjects together into a distinctly 1970s Japanese festival design.

Significance

This poster captures the breadth of Toei’s family cinema programme, bringing animation and live-action special-effects entertainment together on one sheet. The combination of Japanese Spider-Man, Captain Harlock, Candy Candy, and Puss in Boots gives it particular appeal for collectors of Marvel adaptations, classic anime, tokusatsu, and Japanese theatrical advertising.
