"The Condemned of Altona", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1962, STB Size (51x145cm) M74
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1962 for the first release of The Condemned of Altona.
This almost 5′ tall STB poster features fantastic artwork. The tatekan STB format had much lower print numbers compared to regular Japanese B2s. They are very rare, especially for more popular film titles, and are highly sought after by collectors today.
The Condemned of Altona is a 1962 drama film directed by Vittorio De Sica, based on the acclaimed 1959 play by Jean-Paul Sartre. The film stars Sophia Loren, Maximilian Schell, Fredric March, and Robert Wagner in a story set in postwar Germany, where a wealthy industrialist’s return home unearths long-buried secrets about guilt, legacy, and moral responsibility.
At the heart of the film is Franz, a man who has confined himself to the attic of the family mansion for years, believing the world outside to be destroyed. As the layers of the past unravel, The Condemned of Altona confronts questions of complicity, denial, and the psychological scars of war.
With powerful performances and direction by De Sica, this adaptation preserves Sartre’s existential weight while adding cinematic intensity.
