“Reality Bites” / 「リアリティ・バイツ」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1994, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) I355

Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1994 Japanese release of Reality Bites / 「リアリティ・バイツ」, Ben Stiller’s feature directorial debut starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, and Ben Stiller.

Set among recent university graduates struggling with work, relationships, and adult expectations, the film became one of the defining cinematic portraits of Generation X.

Film background

The story follows Lelaina Pierce, an aspiring filmmaker documenting the lives of her friends after graduation.

Lelaina shares a Houston apartment with Troy Dyer, an intelligent but directionless musician; Vickie Miner, an ambitious retail manager; and Sammy Gray, who is coming to terms with his identity and uncertain future.

While attempting to turn her documentary footage into a professional opportunity, Lelaina becomes caught between two contrasting relationships.

Troy represents emotional intensity, artistic independence, and resistance to conventional success. Michael Grates, a polished television executive, offers stability and access to the media world Lelaina hopes to enter.

Their conflict reflects the film’s broader questions about authenticity, employment, ambition, and whether personal ideals can survive the practical pressures of adulthood.

The film was directed by Ben Stiller, from a screenplay by Helen Childress.

The principal cast includes:

Winona Ryder
Ethan Hawke
Ben Stiller
Janeane Garofalo
Steve Zahn

The film was produced by Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg, and Stacey Sher, with cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki.

Its soundtrack became closely associated with the film’s identity, featuring artists including Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories, U2, Crowded House, The Knack, Dinosaur Jr., World Party, and Lenny Kravitz.

Poster design

This Japanese poster presents the film’s central romantic triangle within a clean, editorial composition.

Winona Ryder as Lelaina stands at the centre in a red sleeveless top, smiling with a mixture of confidence and uncertainty.

At left, Ben Stiller as Michael looks towards her attentively, while Ethan Hawke as Troy faces outward from the right side with a more detached and confrontational expression.

Their arrangement immediately communicates Lelaina’s position between two incompatible possibilities.

Behind them, a dark wall is covered with handwritten words and phrases associated with early-1990s urban life:

“Love”
“Relationships”
“credit cards”
“friends”
“romance”
“trust”
“jobs”
“channel surfing”
“decaf”
“communication”

The largest word, “Love,” dominates the centre, while the surrounding terms create a visual catalogue of the social, emotional, and economic concerns shaping the characters’ lives.

The Japanese tagline at upper left reads:

「遠まわりしてわかった、ほんとの恋。
答えは…」

Translated:

“After taking the long way around, I understood what true love was. The answer is…”

Across the top, the three principal stars receive prominent bilingual billing:

WINONA RYDER / ウィノナ・ライダー
ETHAN HAWKE / イーサン・ホーク
BEN STILLER / ベン・スティラー

The large Japanese title:

「リアリティ・バイツ」

appears across the lower section in refined red lettering, with the English title:

“REALITY BITES”

directly beneath it.

The cream background, black photographic border, restrained typography, and carefully arranged star portraits give the poster the appearance of a contemporary magazine layout, perfectly suited to the film’s youth-culture setting.

Condition

Excellent+ condition. An exceptionally well-preserved example retaining clean cream areas, vivid red typography, sharp photographic detail, and superb overall display impact.

There are only extremely minor signs of age or handling consistent with an original Japanese theatrical poster from this period. It would be difficult to improve upon this example.
