Sale price$110.00
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 2002 for the first Japanese release of Red Dragon / 「レッド・ドラゴン」, Brett Ratner’s psychological horror thriller based on the 1981 novel by Thomas Harris.
Positioned as the terrifying first chapter in the Hannibal Lecter saga, Red Dragon brings together an exceptional ensemble cast: Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes, Harvey Keitel, Emily Watson, Mary-Louise Parker, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. This Japanese poster captures the film’s central tension with striking clarity: Hannibal Lecter’s looming psychological presence and Will Graham’s descent back into the darkness he once escaped.
Film background Directed by Brett Ratner, Red Dragon follows former FBI profiler Will Graham, who is brought out of retirement to help track a brutal serial killer known as “The Tooth Fairy.” To understand the killer’s mind, Graham is forced to return to the imprisoned psychiatrist and cannibalistic murderer who nearly destroyed him: Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
Set before the events of The Silence of the Lambs, the film serves as a prequel within the Hannibal Lecter storyline. It explores the origins of Graham and Lecter’s relationship, the psychological cost of criminal profiling, and the terrifying intimacy between investigator and monster.
The film was a strong commercial success and is often noted for its impressive cast, particularly Anthony Hopkins’ return as Lecter, Edward Norton’s restrained performance as Will Graham, and Ralph Fiennes’ disturbing portrayal of Francis Dolarhyde.
Poster design The poster is dominated by an enormous, close-cropped image of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, his face split between shadow and warm amber light. His single visible eye fixes the viewer with a direct, controlled menace, immediately establishing Lecter as the psychological centre of the design.
Running vertically down the left side is the Japanese tagline:
「《悪の根源》を知る為には その原点に戻らねばならない。」 “To know the root of evil, one must return to its origin.”
Below Lecter’s face, a solitary figure — Edward Norton as Will Graham — walks down a stark, symmetrical prison corridor, framed by dark walls and warm institutional light. The image suggests both investigation and entrapment: Graham must re-enter Lecter’s world in order to confront another killer.
The cast billing is printed in white above the title, prominently naming Hopkins, Norton, Fiennes, Keitel, Watson, Parker, and Hoffman. At the bottom, the Japanese title 「レッド・ドラゴン」 appears in bold red and white lettering, with the subheading:
「ハンニバル・レクター3部作の中で最も恐るべき第1章」 “The most terrifying first chapter in the Hannibal Lecter trilogy.”
The overall design is dark, elegant, and highly effective: a psychological horror poster built around gaze, shadow, confinement, and origin.
