“River of No Return”, Original Re-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1970, B3 Size (36 × 51 cm) Q36

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B3 poster printed in 1970 for the theatrical re-release of River of No Return (帰らざる河), the classic 20th Century-Fox western directed by Otto Preminger and starring Marilyn Monroe, Robert Mitchum, Rory Calhoun, and Tommy Rettig. The film was originally released in 1954, and Japanese material for later revival screenings is notably scarcer than first-release paper for many better-known Monroe titles. The elegant full-length Monroe image gives this example particularly strong appeal for collectors of Marilyn Monroe, classic Hollywood, and vintage Japanese cinema paper.

Film background
Originally released in 1954, River of No Return is a western adventure set during the frontier gold-rush era. The story follows Matt Calder, his young son, and saloon singer Kay as they are forced into a dangerous river journey after betrayal and theft leave them stranded in the wilderness. The film was produced by Stanley Rubin, directed by Otto Preminger, and photographed in CinemaScope and Technicolor, with Monroe and Mitchum forming one of its most enduring star pairings. In Japan, the film was released under the title 帰らざる河.

Poster design
This is a superb and highly displayable Japanese re-release design. The front is strikingly minimal: Marilyn Monroe stands alone against a rich yellow ground, holding a guitar and wearing one of the film’s memorable performance costumes, while the vertical Japanese title at lower right adds a bold graphic counterpoint. It is an unusually clean and stylish composition, closer in spirit to a fashion or pin-up image than a conventional western poster, which is exactly what makes it so attractive. The reverse is also of great interest, featuring extensive Japanese text, cast and staff information, and film stills—typical of period Japanese B3 campaign material and adding to its archival charm.
