“Roujin Z” (老人Z), Original Japanese Promotional Poster 1991, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O99
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1991 for the domestic promotional campaign of Roujin Z (老人Z). Issued “Not for sale. For promotional use only.” by Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., this non-theatrical B2 was distributed in small numbers to promote the film and related media, making it notably scarce and highly collectible. Illustration credit on the poster reads FUMIO IIDA.
Film background
A sharp sci-fi satire from director Hiroyuki Kitakubo based on a story conceived and supervised by Katsuhiro Otomo, Roujin Z explores eldercare, automation, and runaway technology in early-’90s Japan. Produced by APPP, it stands as a key post-Akira feature that brought together a powerhouse staff of animators and designers.
Poster design
A spectacular industrial collage shows a giant Buddha engulfed by cables, signage, cranes, and ducts, with a blazing dragon motif erupting from the machinery—an image perfectly matching the film’s collision of tradition, technology, and chaos. Minimal text sits at right (“Roujin-Z” with a short English blurb), while the lower margin carries the Sony credit, the “Not for sale / promotional use only” line, and the illustrator credit to Fumio Iida. Striking composition and muted off-white field give this B2 tremendous wall presence.
