“Roujin Z” (老人Z), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1991, B1 Size (71 × 103 cm)
This is an original Japanese B1 poster printed in 1991 for the first theatrical release of Roujin Z—Hiroyuki Kitakubo’s sci-fi satire from a story and screenplay by Katsuhiro Otomo.
Film background
Set in near-future Japan, an experimental robotic hospital bed (Z-001) designed to care for the elderly goes rogue with its first patient, drawing in nursing student Haruko, a band of mischievous retirees, and the military as the machine evolves beyond its brief. Mixing social commentary on aging and bureaucracy with mecha action and Otomo’s edge, the film became a cult favorite of early-’90s anime.
Poster design
A striking hallway composition shows the white-haired patient scrambling from the hulking teal Z-001 unit—tentacular cables and glowing “eyes” peering from the chassis—while a single red emergency button punctuates the sterile wall. The lower white band carries the English hype copy (“The best staff ever gathered… A ‘Super Entertainment Animation’…”) above the bold brush title 「老人Z」. Printed credits on the sheet include Illustration: Katsuhiro Otomo, Not for sale. For promotional use only., and company lines for Tokyo Theaters, TV Asahi/MOVIC, and Sony Music—hallmarks of an issued theatrical promotional B1.
