“The Great Wall” (グレートウォール), Original Japanese Movie Poster 2017, Matt Damon / Jing Tian / Andy Lau, B2 Format (c. 51 × 73 cm) — U36

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the first Japanese release of The Great Wall in 2017. Distributed in Japan by Toho-Towa, the film opened on 14 April 2017, following its Chinese premiere in December 2016. This design presents the international ensemble against the film’s vast mountain fortifications and fiery battle scenes.

Directed by Zhang Yimou, the fantasy adventure stars Matt Damon, Jing Tian, Andy Lau, Pedro Pascal and Willem Dafoe. Set in an imagined ancient China, it follows European mercenaries who encounter an elite army defending the Great Wall against monstrous creatures. Damon’s character finds himself drawn into a struggle for humanity’s survival, giving the film’s large-scale action a story of trust, courage and shared purpose. The production was Zhang’s first English-language feature.

Printed on one B2 sheet, the composition centres on Matt Damon drawing a bow, with the arrow cutting diagonally across the foreground. His dark armour and concentrated expression establish the immediate action, while Jing Tian’s vivid blue armour introduces a strong contrast on the left. Andy Lau, Pedro Pascal and Willem Dafoe appear behind him, their staggered placement giving depth to the ensemble.

The Great Wall winds through the mountainous background beneath a turbulent sky filled with flaming projectiles. Explosions illuminate the battlements, while sparks rise across the darker lower section. The combination of close character portraits and a sweeping landscape conveys both the human drama and the scale of the siege.

The Japanese title, 「グレートウォール」, appears in large, textured gold lettering above the matching English title. Promotional copy highlights Matt Damon and the director of Hero. Below, the 3D / 2D, IMAX 3D, MX4D and 4DX logos accompany the prominent “4.14 (FRI.)” release announcement.

The vertical tagline reads:

The ensemble imagery, dramatic diagonals and contrasting blue, gold and fiery orange tones give this poster a strong display presence. It is an appealing example for collectors of Zhang Yimou, Matt Damon, Andy Lau, fantasy cinema and Japanese theatrical poster design.
