“Sherlock Hound” (名探偵ホームズ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1984, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O864

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the 1984 Japanese cinema release of Sherlock Hound (名探偵ホームズ), the beloved animated canine reimagining of Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective world. This particular poster was issued for the theatrical presentation of the episodes “The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle” (青い紅玉の巻) and “Treasure Under the Sea” (海底の財宝の巻), and prominently credits Hayao Miyazaki on the poster itself as 宮崎駿監督作品. The film opened theatrically in Japan on 11 March 1984, produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, with cooperation from Tokuma Shoten, and distributed by Toei.

A charming and highly collectible pre-Studio Ghibli theatrical poster, this release belongs to the important period immediately before the founding of Studio Ghibli, when Miyazaki was developing many of the visual and narrative qualities that would soon define his most celebrated works. Because this poster promotes a theatrical compilation tied specifically to the Miyazaki-directed Sherlock Hound material, it has long been especially desirable among Miyazaki, Ghibli, and anime poster collectors.

Poster design
A wonderfully lively and imaginative Japanese design bursting with colour and movement. At the centre, a large magnifying glass frames Sherlock Hound and Dr. Watson, instantly establishing the detective theme while giving the composition a playful sense of scale and action. Around them are numerous vivid vignette scenes from the adventures, including Holmes and Watson in their antique motorcar, flying contraptions, underwater treasure imagery, a steam locomotive, and appearances by Professor Moriarty and his gang.

The bold yellow Japanese copy across the top announces the work as a thrilling slapstick adventure, while the speech bubble at upper right adds further promotional excitement. The striking red title 名探偵ホームズ dominates the lower section, with the two featured story titles printed beneath in blue. A decorative row of Victorian London horse-drawn street scenes runs along the bottom edge, completing the design with great charm and making this one of the most visually appealing Sherlock Hound posters.
