This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster produced for the 3 April 2019 Blu-ray and DVD release of Shoplifters / 「万引き家族」, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s internationally acclaimed family drama.

The film won the Palme d’Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival and received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Foreign Language Film. This home-video campaign poster prominently displays its Cannes recognition alongside one of the film’s warmest ensemble portraits.

Film background

Set on the economic margins of contemporary Tokyo, the story follows an unconventional household surviving through temporary work, pension income, and petty theft.

The family consists of Osamu and Nobuyo Shibata, the young boy Shota, Nobuyo’s sister Aki, and the elderly Hatsue. Although they live in poverty and share no simple legal or biological relationship, they have constructed a close domestic life around affection, loyalty, and mutual dependence.

After Osamu and Shota discover a neglected young girl named Yuri alone in the cold, they bring her home. What begins as temporary shelter develops into a lasting emotional bond, despite the legal and moral consequences of keeping her.

When an unexpected incident exposes the family to official scrutiny, their concealed histories and relationships begin to unravel. The film asks whether family is defined primarily by blood, law, shared experience, or the deliberate choice to care for another person.

The film was written, directed, and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda, with music composed by Haruomi Hosono.

Sakura Ando’s performance received particular acclaim, while the film also became one of the final major screen appearances of the celebrated actress Kirin Kiki.

Poster design

Translated:

Condition

Excellent condition. A highly attractive and well-preserved example, retaining warm photographic colour, clean white borders, clear typography, and excellent overall display impact.

There are only light signs of age and handling consistent with an original Japanese promotional poster from this period.
