“Sid and Nancy” (シド・アンド・ナンシー), Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1997 (film 1986), Gary Oldman / Chloe Webb, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) S164

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the 1997 Japanese revival release of Alex Cox’s cult biographical drama Sid and Nancy (シド・アンド・ナンシー), starring Gary Oldman as Sid Vicious and Chloe Webb as Nancy Spungen. The film was originally released in 1986 and first opened theatrically in Japan on 18 March 1988; this distinctive poster belongs to the subsequent July 1997 Japanese theatrical revival, distributed by Cable Hogue (ケイブルホーグ).

Directed by Alex Cox and written by Cox and Abbe Wool, the film traces the destructive relationship between Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, following them from the London punk scene through addiction, isolation and their ultimately tragic stay at New York’s Chelsea Hotel. Gary Oldman’s intense portrayal of Vicious became one of the defining early performances of his career, while Chloe Webb’s Nancy is equally central to the film’s raw, confrontational energy.

Poster design
A superb Japan-specific revival design that abandons conventional film-poster polish for the photocopied, distressed visual language of punk flyers, fanzines and underground music graphics.

The upper section is dominated by a grainy black-and-white close-up of Sid and Nancy kissing, while the lower image reduces the couple to a hazy red silhouette embracing in a bleak urban setting. These two images—one aggressively intimate, the other almost ghostlike—perfectly encapsulate the film’s combination of romance, self-destruction and mythology.

Across the composition, the phrases LOVE KILLS and SID AND NANCY are repeatedly overprinted, fragmented and layered in rough typewriter / stencil-style lettering. The irregular red borders, cream paper field and apparently misregistered typography intentionally resemble a handmade punk gig poster or xeroxed ’zine, making this 1997 revival campaign especially appropriate to the subject.

The small Japanese line accompanying LOVE KILLS reads:

「生き急いだ恋人たち」

— approximately “The lovers who lived too fast.”

The right-hand credit block prominently identifies:

Sid Vicious = Gary Oldman
Nancy Spungen = Chloe Webb

and also highlights the soundtrack contributions of Joe Strummer, The Pogues and Pray for Rain.

Unlike the more conventional Japanese campaign created for the film’s original 1988 release, this 1997 revival poster deliberately embraces the anarchic graphic vocabulary of punk itself, making it one of the strongest Japanese designs associated with the film.

It is nearly 30 years old!

Condition
Excellent. The poster retains excellent colour and contrast, with the deep reds, blacks and cream ground remaining particularly strong and the deliberately distressed typography presenting exactly as intended. There are only very minor signs of age and handling, with no significant condition issue detracting from the central imagery or overall display.
