“Silverado” / 「シルバラード」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 1985, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA970
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the Japanese release of Silverado / 「シルバラード」, the acclaimed American Western directed, co-written, and produced by Lawrence Kasdan.
One of the defining Western revival films of the 1980s, Silverado combines frontier action, ensemble storytelling, wit, and large-scale cinematic spectacle. This Japanese poster is especially striking, with a bold illustrated (Bob Peak) composition, blazing sunset tones, and a dramatic action-adventure design typical of the period.
Film background
Released in 1985, Silverado follows a misfit band of four cowboy gunslingers who cross paths on their way to the frontier town of Silverado. Once there, they join forces to confront a corrupt sheriff and a ruthless cattle rancher terrorizing the local community.
The film was directed by Lawrence Kasdan, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Mark Kasdan. Its celebrated ensemble cast includes Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, Rosanna Arquette, Brian Dennehy, Jeff Goldblum, and Linda Hunt.
The film was widely praised for revitalizing the traditional Hollywood Western with contemporary energy and style. It received two Academy Award nominations, for Best Sound and Best Original Score, and remains a highly regarded cult favourite for its cast and sweeping action.
Poster design
The Japanese poster uses a dramatic illustrated collage composition set against a glowing orange and yellow sunset sky. The central image prominently features the film’s four principal heroes: Scott Glenn at upper left, Kevin Kline at upper right, Danny Glover holding a rifle, and Kevin Costner in a dynamic action pose firing a pistol.
Supporting imagery includes a charging posse of horsemen across the mid-ground, smaller Western action scenes below, and a small oval inset portrait of Linda Hunt near the bottom. The composition has a bold, heroic quality and captures the spirit of the modern epic Western.
The two principal Japanese taglines read:
「危険な土地、無法の時代…… 正義に生命賭けて、いま挑むビッグ・ファイター4!」
“A dangerous land, a lawless era... Risking their lives for justice, the four big fighters challenge it now!”
and
「さあ行こう!興奮、痛快、アドベンチャーの世界へ。」
“Let’s go! To a world of excitement, thrill, and adventure.”
The lower section is dominated by the massive red katakana title 「シルバラード」, with the original English title Silverado printed in white nearby. Detailed Japanese credits and cast billing are set below in white text. The overall design is bold, energetic, and highly evocative of 1980s Japanese poster art for imported Hollywood action films.
