“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (白雪姫), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1980, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA743

Sale price $135.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1980 for the Japanese re-release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (白雪姫), Walt Disney’s historic first full-length animated feature film. This particular campaign promoted the “Latest Japanese Version” (最新日本語版), issued to accompany a new Japanese dub for contemporary audiences.

Few films occupy a more important place in cinema history. First released in the United States in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the picture that established Disney feature animation on a permanent footing and transformed the possibilities of the medium. This Japanese poster is especially appealing for its richly illustrated, character-filled design and its clear association with the celebrated 1980 re-release campaign. This example is in excellent condition and presents beautifully.

Film background
Based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs follows the young princess Snow White as she flees the murderous jealousy of the Evil Queen and finds shelter in the forest cottage of the seven dwarfs. Combining fantasy, romance, comedy, suspense, and music, the film became one of the foundational achievements of animated cinema.

Produced by Walt Disney and supervised by David Hand, the film was a landmark technical and artistic achievement, proving that animation could sustain a feature-length narrative with emotional depth and mass appeal. It was an extraordinary commercial success and remains one of the most influential animated films ever made. In recognition of its importance, Walt Disney received a special Honorary Academy Award, famously presented as one full-sized Oscar accompanied by seven miniature statuettes.

Poster design
The poster is a wonderfully lush and inviting piece of Disney marketing art. At the centre sits Snow White, surrounded by woodland animals, with a bluebird perched delicately on her hand. Around her gathers an enchanting assembly of characters from the film, including the Seven Dwarfs at left and a host of forest creatures across the lower half of the composition.

The background incorporates several narrative vignettes: the distant castle beneath a rainbow, the Evil Queen in witch form offering the poisoned apple, and the Prince with Snow White, all contributing to the fairytale atmosphere. The design is rich in colour and movement, with the greens of the forest set against the brilliant red title 「白雪姫」 dominating the lower portion of the sheet.

At the top, the Japanese tagline reads: “Carried on numerous beautiful melodies, a story of love has arrived…” On the upper left, the vertical text promotes the film as an eternal Disney masterpiece. Particularly notable is the small yellow oval at lower left reading 最新日本語版 (“Latest Japanese Version”), identifying this poster as part of the 1980 campaign built around the new Japanese-language release.
