The Emperor Waltz (Japanese title: 皇帝円舞曲, Kōtei Enbukyoku) is a Technicolor musical-romance originally produced in 1948 by Paramount and directed by Billy Wilder. It stars Bing Crosby as a brash American gramophone salesman who journeys to pre-war Austria hoping to impress Emperor Franz Joseph—and ends up courting a headstrong countess played by Joan Fontaine. Wilder’s first colour feature, the film blends light-hearted class satire with lavish Viennese ballroom sequences and showcases two Academy Award–nominated elements: Victor Young’s score and Edith Head’s ornate costumes.
