“Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”, Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1983, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O243
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1983 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, issued in Japan under its original release title ジェダイの復讐. Directed by Richard Marquand from a story by George Lucas, the film was released in Japan on 2 July 1983 and brought the original Star Wars trilogy to its first conclusion.
Film background
Released in 1983, Return of the Jedi stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher, with Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, and Frank Oz. The story follows Luke Skywalker’s return to Tatooine to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, before building toward the climactic confrontation with Darth Vader and the Empire. In Japan, the film was distributed theatrically by 20th Century Fox.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly recognisable original Japanese release design. The composition is dominated by a huge Imperial Star Destroyer advancing across space above the curve of a blue planet, with the Death Star looming at left and Darth Vader’s helmet emerging ominously at upper right. Around this central image are inset scenes of the Millennium Falcon, Rebel and Imperial space combat, Luke and Leia, Endor action, Han Solo, and the droids, all anchored by the bold turquoise-and-red Japanese title at the bottom. It is an exceptionally attractive country-of-origin poster for the film, combining spectacle, character, and classic 1980s Japanese layout in a way that displays beautifully.
Condition
Very Good. Please review the photos—they show the exact poster for sale. The poster presents strongly overall, with rich colour and very good display appeal. There is light age-related handling and wear consistent with an original 1983 theatrical poster, including fold and storage wear, minor edge wear, and a small area of edge damage at the upper right. There is also felt-tip pen writing on the reverse that is visible from the front, most notably in the lower portion of the design; this has been taken into account in the pricing. Despite this, the poster still displays very well overall.
It is over 40 years old!
It is not a reproduction or a reprint.
