“Straw Dogs” (わらの犬), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1971, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O533
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1971 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Straw Dogs (わらの犬), the controversial psychological thriller directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Dustin Hoffman and Susan George, released in Japan by 20th Century Fox.
Film background
Adapted from Gordon Williams’ novel “The Siege of Trencher’s Farm”, Straw Dogs follows American mathematician David Sumner and his wife Amy as they move to her rural Cornish hometown, only to encounter escalating hostility and violence from local men. The film became notorious on release for its explicit depiction of sexual assault and vigilante violence, provoking censorship battles and bans in several countries and remaining a lightning rod in debates about screen violence and misogyny.
Poster design
The Japanese B2 focuses on character psychology rather than overt brutality. A huge close‑up of Dustin Hoffman’s bespectacled face fills the sheet, tinted in burnt orange that suggests both dusk light and simmering tension. Above, a soft‑focus image of Susan George floats against the sky, while a boxed still to the right shows Hoffman aiming a shotgun, with a terrified Amy in the background—an ominous foreshadowing of the siege to come. The bold hand‑brushed white title 「わらの犬」 cuts across the centre, its rough strokes mirroring Peckinpah’s raw, unnerving tone. At the lower edge a tiny farmhouse sits isolated against the horizon, and the 20th Century Fox and 映倫 (Eirin) seals confirm the poster’s theatrical provenance.
