Then and Now (Swimmer) – Tadanori Yokoo, 1991
Silkscreen Print | Edition of 150 | Hand-Signed | 80 x 120 cm
This large-format silkscreen print, part of Tadanori Yokoo’s iconic Then and Now series, was created in 1991 and showcases the artist’s signature fusion of pop surrealism and cultural critique. Issued in a limited edition of 150, the work is hand-signed in pencil by Yokoo and marked 29/150 in the lower left corner. His embossed seal confirms authenticity.
The composition is split into contrasting halves:
-
On the left, a dramatically stylized swimmer with bright pink skin and an exaggerated expression charges through a bold blue sea. Behind her looms a traditional Japanese castle, and postcard-like imagery floats across the surface—some humorous, some nostalgic. Gothic type reads “Then and” in classic Yokoo style.
-
On the right, a stark black-and-white waterfall flows down jagged cliffs, blending painterly abstraction with photographic collage. Figures from vintage photographs are subtly overlaid in the cascading water. The word “Now” appears in deep blue Gothic script alongside the Japanese title for “Tales of Past and Present” (今昔物語).
Yokoo masterfully plays with time, memory, and identity, contrasting commercial pop culture with spiritual and historical imagery in a deeply layered visual language.
