"TADANORI YOKOO - Yokoo Tadanori Print Exhibition (横尾忠則版画展) “Exhibition 38 Prints of Tadanori Yokoo” Poster", Japanese Contemporary Art Poster, Original Offset 1993, Rare, B2 Size (c.51 × 73 cm) O617

Sale price $300.00

This is an original Japanese B2 offset poster printed in 1993 for 横尾忠則版画展 (Tadanori Yokoo Print Exhibition) — titled in English on the design as “EXHIBITION 38 PRINTS OF TADANORI YOKOO.” The exhibition dates are printed directly into the artwork: 1993年10月3日 – 1994年4月17日, making this a highly collectible, time-capsule piece of early‑90s Japanese graphic culture.

Japan Poster Shop has acquired a substantial and unique collection of original Tadanori Yokoo posters from one of the most prolific collectors in Japan. This individual has a colorful life story, having invested and dedicated many decades to his love for Yokoo’s boundary‑pushing, high-impact designs.

Poster design (focus)

This poster is a masterclass in Yokoo’s pop-surreal language—bold, graphic, and psychologically charged:

  • A striking horizontal color-field structure dominates the sheet: deep black fading into red, a cool blue band, and a vivid acid green ground—minimal, modern, and instantly eye-catching.

  • Three stylized figures collide in a surreal tableau: flattened silhouettes, white hands with yellow nails, and hot accents (reds/pinks) that create tension and visual rhythm.

  • The exhibition information is integrated into the image itself—printed across the pink figure like an official stamp or announcement—turning “event text” into part of the artwork rather than a separate block.

  • A subtle diagonal line reads “EXHIBITION 38 PRINTS OF TADANORI YOKOO”, while the Japanese title 横尾忠則版画展 is printed boldly across the black area—classic Yokoo: typography as image, and image as typography.

  • The date line running down the leg (1993–1994) gives the piece a conceptual punch—graphic design that literally becomes the figure.

It’s the kind of poster that works on two levels at once: gallery advertisement and standalone contemporary artwork.

About Tadanori Yokoo

Tadanori Yokoo is one of Japan’s most influential postwar graphic designers and artists—celebrated worldwide for fusing Pop Art intensity, collage-like storytelling, and a uniquely Japanese sense of symbolism into unforgettable poster design. His work famously blurs the line between fine art and commercial print culture, and originals from key periods like this are increasingly hard to source.
