"Taxi Driver (タクシー・ドライバー)", Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1976, B3 Size (36 × 51 cm) J182

Sale price $135.00

This is an original Japanese B3 poster printed in 1976 for Martin Scorsese’s incendiary New York masterpiece Taxi Driver. Written by Paul Schrader, shot by Michael Chapman, and featuring Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, and Harvey Keitel, the film won the Cannes Grand Prix (Palme d’Or) and stands as a defining portrait of urban alienation. Bernard Herrmann’s final score—recorded shortly before his death—wraps the film in brooding jazz noir and has become inseparable from its mythos.

Film background
De Niro’s Travis Bickle—insomniac cabbie and unreliable avenger—became an archetype, influencing generations of character studies and crime dramas. The film’s gritty location shooting on 1970s 42nd Street, its Vietnam-era disillusionment, and its critique of vigilantism made it a cultural touchstone whose style (the M-65 jacket, the mohawk) and lines (“You talkin’ to me?”) reverberate through cinema and pop culture.

Poster design
A stark, documentary-like street photograph places De Niro mid-stride against a blown-out Times Square of “ADULT MOVIE” marquees and TOW AWAY ZONE signage—visual shorthand for moral decay. A poetic copy block in blue type sits above the bold Japanese title 「タクシー・ドライバー」 with the small English TAXI DRIVER beside it; a Cannes laurel marks the win. The reverse side (printed in black on white) carries an extensive Japanese press layout with production notes, cast/crew lists, story synopsis, and thumbnail stills—typical of prestige B3s prepared for theatrical display.
