“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” / 「ミュータント・タートルズ」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 2015, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) J298
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 2015 Japanese release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / 「ミュータント・タートルズ」, Jonathan Liebesman’s live-action reboot of the celebrated comic-book and animation franchise.
Produced by Michael Bay, the film combines motion-capture characters, large-scale visual effects, martial arts, and contemporary superhero action. It opened theatrically in Japan on 7 February 2015, in both 3D and 2D formats.
Film background
The story follows April O’Neil, a New York television reporter investigating a masked criminal organisation known as the Foot Clan.
Her search leads to the discovery of four mutated turtles living beneath the city: Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo. Trained in ninjutsu by their rat sensei, Splinter, the brothers have secretly been protecting New York from the shadows.
April gradually discovers that she shares a connection with the turtles’ origins. Together with cameraman Vern Fenwick, she joins them in confronting the armoured warrior Shredder and industrialist Eric Sacks, whose scheme threatens the entire city.
The film was directed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay, Andrew Form, Bradley Fuller, Galen Walker, and Scott Mednick.
The principal cast includes:
Megan Fox
Will Arnett
William Fichtner
Tohoru Masamune
Whoopi Goldberg
The four turtles were portrayed through performance capture by Pete Ploszek, Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, and Jeremy Howard, with Johnny Knoxville providing Leonardo’s voice in the finished film.
Poster design
This spectacular Japanese poster presents the four turtles plunging towards the viewer through a cityscape erupting in fire and debris.
Leonardo dominates the foreground, his blue mask, armour, and drawn katana immediately identifying him as the group’s leader.
Above him, Raphael lunges forward with his sai, while Donatello and Michelangelo descend through the explosion with their distinctive staff and nunchaku. The extreme perspective makes the characters appear to burst directly through the surface of the poster.
The blazing orange-and-yellow explosion contrasts with the turtles’ green skin, coloured masks, metallic equipment, and the dark architecture below. The densely packed composition captures the film’s mixture of urban scale, martial-arts movement, and blockbuster spectacle.
At the centre appears the red-and-yellow starburst:
「カワバンガ!」
Translated:
“Cowabunga!”
The white-and-green tagline at right reads:
Translated:
“The ones who will save New York from disaster are an unexpected team of four!? What is the destiny they carry?”
The large metallic-green Japanese title reads:
「ミュータント・タートルズ」
The lower promotional line announces:
「『トランスフォーマー』シリーズ
マイケル・ベイが贈る、カメでニンジャなヤツらの超絶アクション・アドベンチャー!!」
Translated:
“From Michael Bay, producer of the Transformers series—a spectacular action adventure starring guys who are both turtles and ninjas!”
The Japanese release information reads:
「2.7[土]3D/2D」
Translated:
“7 February, Saturday—3D and 2D.”
A small explanatory box at lower right defines “Cowabunga” for Japanese audiences as the turtles’ expression for phrases such as “We did it!”, “Let’s go!” and “Awesome!”
The result is an energetic and highly detailed Japanese campaign design that captures the modernised visual identity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles while retaining the personalities, weapons, and famous catchphrase associated with the original franchise.
