“Tempest” (テンペスト), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1959, Silvana Mangano / Geoffrey Horne, B2 Format (c. 51 × 73 cm) — U22

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1959 Japanese release of Tempest, originally titled La tempesta. Released in Japan by Paramount, this dramatic design combines intimate star portraiture with sweeping battle imagery and enormous dimensional lettering.

Directed by Alberto Lattuada and produced by Dino De Laurentiis, the historical adventure stars Silvana Mangano, Geoffrey Horne, Van Heflin, and Viveca Lindfors, with Oscar Homolka, Agnes Moorehead, and Vittorio Gassman among the supporting cast. Drawing on works by Alexander Pushkin, including The Captain’s Daughter, the story follows a young officer and his romance with a commander’s daughter during the Pugachev rebellion against Catherine the Great.

Printed on one B2 sheet, the composition is dominated by a richly coloured photographic close-up of Silvana Mangano and Geoffrey Horne. Above them, the enormous white title 「テンペスト」 projects across the dark background through deep, angular shadows. Pink vertical credits and a compact English title block balance the portrait on the left.

Along the bottom, mounted troops cross water before a fortified city, introducing the scale of the film’s historical setting. A smaller image of the romantic leads appears against flames at the lower left, while an oval portrait shows Viveca Lindfors as Catherine the Great at the lower right. The printed Technirama and full-colour credits reinforce the promise of widescreen spectacle, and the Paramount logo completes the lower corner.

The prominent yellow promotional copy reads:

“From De Laurentiis, producer of War and Peace—a monumental epic of the century, rich in literary atmosphere!”

This direct reference to War and Peace places the film within the ambitious literary spectacles of the period. The combination of romantic portraiture, military action, and bold Japanese typography makes this an appealing example for collectors of Silvana Mangano, historical epics, Dino De Laurentiis productions, and Japanese film advertising of the 1950s.
