“The Beatles Fair” (10th Anniversary of Their Japan Visit / 来日10周年記念 ザ・ビートルズ・フェア), Japanese Music Event Poster, Original Silkscreen 1976, Rare, B1 Size (c.73 × 103cm)
This is an original Japanese silkscreen (screenprint) event poster from 1976, produced as a large-format promotional announcement for a major Beatles exhibition/fair in Tokyo.
Tokyu Department Store (東急百貨店), Shibuya Main Store (渋谷・東急百貨店本店), 1976
Event: 来日10周年記念 ザ・ビートルズ・フェア (“The Beatles Fair”)
This B1-size poster was created for a special limited-run fair held August 6 (Fri)–11 (Wed) at Tokyu Department Store (Shibuya) – 6th floor special venue (6階特設会場), with the admission price of 200円 printed on the piece. The dates and “10th anniversary” theme directly connect this event to The Beatles’ historic 1966 Tokyo visit and Nippon Budokan concerts—a culturally pivotal (and famously tense/security-heavy) moment in Japan’s postwar pop history.
The program copy printed on the poster reads like a time-capsule of mid‑1970s Beatlemania in Japan: a 250‑image photo exhibition covering everything from the early “Silver Beatles” era through post‑breakup activity, a Beatles history/timeline display, an imported poster showcase, plus deep-dive record/publishing/memorabilia/fan-club corners. It even lists daily “event corner” programming (record concerts, film concerts, quiz sessions), and special guest appearances by major Japanese acts including 甲斐よしひろ (Yoshihiro Kai) and チューリップ (Tulip)—all printed directly on the poster.
A standout historical detail is the fair’s emphasis on “real” Beatles-Japan provenance: the poster advertises memorabilia exhibited by 永島達司 (Tatsuji Nagashima)—the legendary Japanese promoter widely credited with bringing The Beatles to Japan in 1966—and rare items loaned by Beatles journalist / former Music Life editor-in-chief 星加ルミ子 (Rumiko Hoshika), known for landmark Beatles coverage in the 1960s.
Visually, the design is bold and iconic late‑Shōwa commercial graphics: a deep black field dominated by huge red “THE BEATLES” type split by a small Union Jack, with four color‑tinted portraits of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr at the corners. The Japanese headline “来日10周年記念 / ザ・ビートルズ・フェア” sits above dense event copy, while the bottom credits and Tokyu branding anchor it as a department-store cultural “fair” poster of the era.
