“The Birds” (鳥), Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 1985, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O738

Sale price $130.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1985 for a Japanese re-release of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (鳥), presented as part of a special Hitchcock revival programme—titled here “The Hitchcock Last Festival.”

Film background
First released in 1963, The Birds is one of Hitchcock’s most influential suspense films: an escalating, inexplicable outbreak of avian attacks that turns an everyday coastal town into a site of dread. Its lasting power lies in Hitchcock’s control of tension and rhythm—building terror from ordinary spaces and routines—alongside its famously unsettling soundscape and set-piece choreography.

Poster design
A striking, minimalist Japanese design dominated by Hitchcock himself: a bold, high-contrast black silhouette portrait fills the right half, with birds circling across the pale field. At centre, a colour still of Tippi Hedren and the children under attack anchors the film’s most iconic imagery, while the typography plays like a curated festival bill—THE HITCHCOCK LAST FESTIVAL above, and THE BIRDS / 鳥 below, punctuated by the oversized red kanji block for maximum graphic impact. The overall effect is elegant, modern, and unmistakably “Japanese revival-programme” in tone.
