“Family Diary” (家族日誌), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1964, Marcello Mastroianni / Jacques Perrin, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) — T81

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1964 first Japanese release of Family Diary, originally titled Cronaca familiare. Distributed by Nippon Herald Films, this restrained, atmospheric design captures the tenderness and melancholy of Valerio Zurlini’s acclaimed drama.

Directed by Valerio Zurlini and adapted from Vasco Pratolini’s autobiographical novel, the film stars Marcello Mastroianni and Jacques Perrin as brothers Enrico and Lorenzo. Raised apart in very different circumstances, they struggle to overcome emotional distance, poverty and illness. Their relationship gives the film its intimate focus, supported by Giuseppe Rotunno’s cinematography and Goffredo Petrassi’s score.

The film jointly won the Golden Lion at the 1962 Venice Film Festival, sharing the award with Andrei Tarkovsky’s Ivan’s Childhood. The Japanese campaign prominently advertises its festival recognition, presenting the film as a distinguished literary adaptation with considerable emotional appeal.

A large, softly printed profile of Jacques Perrin dominates the composition, his thoughtful expression rendered in muted green-grey tones. The portrait fills much of the sheet, establishing a quiet, reflective mood. Along the bottom, a smaller colour photograph brings together Mastroianni, Perrin and their grandmother, played by Sylvie, against a backdrop of bare trees, steps and Italian architecture.

The oversized Japanese title 「家族日誌」 stretches across the upper section in distinctive red lettering formed from parallel lines. Its precise geometry contrasts with the soft photographic image beneath. Teal cast and director credits sit below the award announcements, while the English title “Family Diary” appears in white across the lower photograph. The Nippon Herald Films name and emblem anchor the bottom-left corner.

The promotional text beneath the title reads:

「薄幸の星の下 美しく触れ合い肩すり寄せる三つの魂!全篇に溢れる清冽な感動!」
“Beneath an unlucky star, three souls tenderly draw together, shoulder to shoulder! Pure, moving emotion fills the entire film!”

The combination of expressive portraiture, delicate colour and unusual title lettering gives this poster a distinctive presence. It is particularly appealing for collectors of Marcello Mastroianni, Jacques Perrin, Valerio Zurlini and Japanese publicity for Italian cinema.
