This is an original Japanese B2 teaser poster printed in 2023 for the domestic campaign of The Boy and the Heron (Japanese title: Kimitachi wa Dō Ikiru ka), Hayao Miyazaki’s long‑awaited return to directing after The Wind Rises. Written and directed by Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, the 2023 fantasy film follows young Mahito as he enters a mysterious tower and crosses into a parallel world guided by a duplicitous heron. The movie went on to become both a critical and commercial success worldwide, winning major international awards and reaffirming Miyazaki’s status as one of cinema’s great storytellers.
Design
This is one of the most coveted early teaser designs. It features Miyazaki’s loose watercolour sketch of the enigmatic grey heron swooping toward the viewer, beak open and green eyes fixed straight ahead. The drawing’s quick ink lines and washes of blue, green and yellow capture the bird’s unsettling, otherworldly energy. At the left, in black vertical kanji, runs the line 「あばよ、友だち」 (“Farewell, friends”), while the bold red title 「君たちはどう生きるか」 cascades down the right. The Studio Ghibli Totoro logo and TOHO credit sit discreetly at the lower edge beside the small 「NOT FOR SALE」 mark, confirming this as a true promotional item issued to cinemas and industry partners rather than a commercial shop poster. The overall effect is minimal, elegant and very Ghibli – a single haunting image inviting you into the film’s strange new world.
